Viswanathan Anand, (Tamil: விசுவநாதன் ஆனந்த்; pronounced IPA: [ʋiʃʋəˈn̪aːt̪ən ˈaːnən̪d̪]; born 11 December 1969) is an Indian chess Grandmaster and the current World Chess Champion.

Anand held the FIDE World Chess Championship from 2000 to 2002, at a time when the world title was split. He became the undisputed World Champion in 2007 and defended his title against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008. With this win, he became the first player in chess history to have won the World Championship in three different formats: Knockout, Tournament, and Match. He then successfully defended his title in the World Chess Championship 2010 against Veselin Topalov, the winner of a challenger match against Gata Kamsky in February 2009.[1] As the reigning champion, he will face the winner of the Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship 2011.

Anand is one of five players in history to break the 2800 mark on the FIDE rating list, and in April 2007 at the age of 37, he became the oldest person to become world number-one for the first time. He was at the top of the world rankings five out of six times, from April 2007 to July 2008, holding the number-one ranking for a total of 15 months. In October 2008, he dropped out of the world top three ranking for the first time since July 1996.

In 2008, he was awarded India’s second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan and being the first sport-person who got this award in Indian history. He is also the first recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991–92, India’s highest sporting honour.

Viswanathan Anand has again become the World Champion of Chess after he defeated Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria. His win in the final match meant that Anand won the 12 match series by 6.5-5.5. The 40 year old grandmaster from India is the greatest chess player from his country and this is the 4th time, he won this prestigious trophy.
It was a tough challenge for the Indian player. Veselin Topalov could take the series to the last game. At one stage, it looked that no one would win but Anand kept his nerve and could win the final match.
In 2007, Anand won the World Chess Championship by edging pass Vladimir Kramnik of Russia. Then, he again successfully defended his title in 2008. He also won FIDE World Chess Champion 2000.
Millions of people in India are happy with the success of one of their own. The parents have expressed their joys to the media. Viswanathan Anand has stated his happiness to a TV Channel this way, “Nice to know I can wake up as World Champion.”
This success will help to create more interest for Chess in India. Anand himself has received numerous awards from Indian Government in the last 25 years.

Going into the final stages of his World Championship match against Veselin Topalov in Sofia, Bulgaria, World champion Viswanathan Anand took radical measures to try to break the deadlock but after a six and a half hour struggle he could manage only a draw after the longest and most complicated game of the match so far.

The match remains tied at 4.5-4.5 with only three games remaining.

Anand had his opponent’s king trapped on the back rank but with his last move before the time control on move 40 and with just three minutes thinking time left, Anand missed a chance to decide the game.
Missing out

After allowing Topalov’s king to escape, it seemed that the World champion’s winning chances had evaporated.

Now both players began to press for victory, Topalov’s queen and running pawns fighting against Anand’s active pieces.

Anand was gaining the upper hand but he was also running terribly short of time, with 10 moves to complete in only seven minutes to avoid a time forfeit.

He reached the move 60 time control and was out of danger of defeat, but the win still required extraordinary technique at a new time limit of 15 minutes plus 30 seconds per move for the remainder of the game. Eventually Anand erred and the game became completely random, with victory possible for either player.
Additional obstacle

Anand had an additional obstacle to overcome on Thursday as, while he was contemplating his 20th move, an electrical fault caused the lighting above the board to flash on and off, and then the main light failed completely.

Rather than stop the game timers, as the arbiter had done during the complete blackout in game five, Anand’s clock continued ticking as he tried to maintain his concentration and find an effective plan.

Fortunately, only three minutes later full-strength lighting returned and Anand almost immediately gave away his queen for two lesser pieces.

Anand handled the resulting position with aplomb. However the game of the match continued, with the winner being hot favourite to take the world title. However, the deadlock remained intact.

The tenth game will be played on Friday.

Jessica Seinfeld Absolved Of Plagiarism Charges | Judge Dismisses Case Against Jessica Seinfeld | Judge Rejects Copyright Suit Against Jessica Seinfeld

Jessica Seinfeld, author and wife of US TV star Jerry Seinfeld, can finally heave a sigh of relief as the after getting reprieve from a copyright infringement case against her which was filed by another author, named Missy Chase Lapine, who had alleged that Jessica had plagiarized from her recipe book for her own book which also dealt with more or less the same subject.
Missy Chase Lapine’s book, titled “The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids’ Favorite Meals” was published by the Running Press. Lapine had earlier tried to publish it from HarperCollins, the renowned publishing company but without any success. Things turned murky when the same publishing house (HarperCollins), published Jessica Seinfeld’s cookery book titled “Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to get Your kid Eating Good Food” and it was noticed that the two books were dealing almost with the same subject. At this point of time a case against Seinfeld was filed for copyright infringement and allied violations.
However the adjudicating Judge of the federal Court, Laura Taylor Swain said on Thursday that though the two books had some resemblance between them yet Ms. Lapine’s book was “dry” and “text heavy” whereas the book by Ms. Seinfeld beard a ” different feel” and that it focused on a “different audience”. Infact it is true, as Ms. Lapine’s book is serious in its tone and presentation with back and grey being used as primary colors, while the second book saw generous use of color and had a peppy feel to it. Well, now that Ms.Seinfeld’s book has received a legal stamp of approval, she can move onto writing her next one.

For many of the people that were affected in some way by the 9/11 tragedy, the date September 11th is a day of mourning and remembrance. It was this day back in 2001 that Americans watched as a plane struck the World Trade Center.

And according to newmajority.com, the tragedy of 9/11 has brought a permanent bond, to many of those that were affected. Gordon Haberman lost his daughter at the WTC and says that it will always be a day of remembrance for him.

A lot of former officials have said that they will never forget that day and I’m sure that goes for many people that lost loved ones in the attack. Some believe that the US has forgotten about that tragic day, but I don’t think that is the case.

Visit here for some famous 9/11 quotes.

It was on September 11th 2001, (9/11) when a series of organized attacks was done by Al- Queda upon the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in America. Everyone was terrorized by this attacks just not American but entire human world. We have given here the quotes and pictures of 9/11.

9/11 quotes, 911 pictures

Here are several quotes by someone who had written ago, they were experts in the field, experienced loss & grief and survived are arranged in a specific sequence.
9/11 Quotes:

Not a day passes over the earth but men and women of no note do great deeds, speak great words, and suffer noble sorrows.

I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.

Whatever it is that I have lost (or must give up) I must grieve. If I do not do my grieving about the old hurts and insults, then, when I am faced with a here and now grief experience, I will end up having to dredge up all that old energy along with the current experience.

Darul Huda Islamic Academy | Kerala Invites | Applications Admissions| Al Huda Guidance for a disunited community

Kozhikode: Darul Huda Islamic University at Chemmad in Malappuram has invited applications for admissions to its secondary school and Qutubussaman Hifdhul Qur’an course for the coming academic year. The application forms can be downloaded from the following websites
www.dhiu.info
www.darulhuda.com
The filled up application forms along with Rs 25 should reach the office of the academy at Principal, Darul Huda PB.3 Tirurangadi PO, 676306 Malappuram District, Kerala. Last date for receiving application forms is 20th of Ramadan, i.e. 10th September, 2009

The Academy began functioning in 1986 and has produced several well-known figures in the field of religion in Kerala. Students from different parts of the country as well as the world come to the academy to learn the Qur’an and other Islamic subjects.
Her confidence overshadowed the edginess in her voice, when she proclaimed, live, on a very orthodox community radio station, “I want this magazine to represent ALL Muslims, regardless of their socio-political affiliations.” This might seem insignificant at first glance, but let me put it in perspective. The South African Muslim community is one beset by many problems, amongst them racism, classicism, sectarianism and of course, sexism. For a Muslim women (gasp) to say that she wishes to bridge these gaps of race, class, sect and gender, could appear to be one of two things: an accomplishment, or a blasphemy, depending on where you stand.

Earlier last month, Khadija Patel, a twentysomething South African masters student, writer, and community activist, took over the reigns of well-established community publication Al Huda. Not only did she give it a face lift in terms of quality and presentation, but a makeover in content as well.
Al Huda’s autumn cover. Image via Khadija Patel.

Khadija hoped for the first issue of the magazine under her wing, to represent new beginnings and to foster unity, through showcasing the diversity of the South African Muslim community.

Did she achieve this? I would have to give her a heads up on that. Despite minor technical glitches, the articles speak for a wide range of viewpoints and ideologies. To have taken on this role as a publisher and editor, in a patriarchal Muslim society, is indeed very brave of Khadija. She has certainly “rocked the boat” of male domination in our community media. This should not be taken to mean that there are no other Muslim women involved in local publications, but rather, that the content and ideas that the new edition of Al Huda has introduced to the readership truly challenges the tradition of the one-dimensional material provided to the South African Muslimah reader.

So, who and what exactly comprises this latest copy of Al Huda? The contributors are as varied as the content, ranging from students, bloggers, artists and activists, to scholars, doctors and accountants, both male and female, writing from South Africa, North America and the Middle East. I am very proud to be one of those contributors.

Snippets

On the intellectual state of the Muslim world:
Huda Ahmed is an Iraqi journalist, currently studying in the United States. She had a joint fellowship for the 2007-2008 academic year at CISAC and CDDRL. In 2006-2007 she held the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, sponsored by the International Women’s Media Foundation, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ahmed’s interests include international relations, ethnic politics and peace, democracy and religion of the West versus the East, and human rights reporting. She is interested in exploring current issues in Iraq related to politics, the status of democracy conflicts, violence, and the impact of war on Iraq.

Prior to her studies in the United States, Ahmed was a reporter for McClatchy Newspapers (formerly Knight Ridder Newspapers) in Baghdad. Beginning in July 2004, she assisted in coverage and translation for a wide range of breaking news and feature stories including the bloody siege of Najaf, Iraq’s historic elections, and corruption in the new Iraqi security forces.

She was recognized by Knight Ridder’s Washington bureau for extraordinary bravery in covering combat during the siege of Najaf in Southern Iraq.

Ahmed served as a reporter and translator for The Washington Post in Baghdad, where she assisted in covering the search for weapons of mass destruction, looting after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, the secret massacre of students during Hussein’s reign, and the abuse of women in the Islamic world among other stories.

Her journalism career began in 1992 when she served as a translator for The Daily Baghdad Observer and Al Jumhurriya Daily, in Baghdad. Earlier in her career, she worked as a translator and a high school teacher in U.A.E, Tunisia, and Libya.

Ahmed, along with 5 other Iraqi journalists from McClatchy’s Baghdad bureau, received the Courage in Journalism Award for 2007 from the International Women’s Media Foundation.

President Obama will deliver a historic speech tonight. Standing before both houses of Congress and the American public, he’s expected to clearly outline his vision for government-run national health care and explain how and why such a plan is tenable in the United States. One way he could help make his case is by showing that a successful plan of that description is already in place: the one administered by the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA).

Actually, Obama has already pointed to the VA hospitals, albeit briefly. Back in July, a small-business owner at a town-hall meeting asked, “What current long-term social program created and run by the government should we look to as a model of success?” Part of the president’s longer response: the VA hospitals, which “have very high satisfaction rates.”

Indeed they do. The VA, which oversees the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), runs the nation’s largest integrated health-care system. In order to meet the diverse and complicated needs of veterans, the VHA operates 153 hospitals, 909 outpatient clinics, 232 Vet Centers, 135 nursing homes, 47 rehabilitation treatment programs, and 108 home-care programs. According to the VA, nearly 8 million veterans were enrolled in the VA health-care system in 2008, while 5.5 million individuals used a VA health-care facility.

Despite its broad mandate and difficult mission, the VHA’s quality indicators have gone up, not down, in recent years. A 2003 studyby the New England Journal of Medicine found that the quality of care at veterans’ health facilities was “significantly better” than Medicare, which is a fee-for-service model. A 2005 survey by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, an independent health-care watchdog, found that veterans’ facilities consistently outperformed the nation’s top private hospitals.

Furthermore, a report by the RAND Corporation concluded that “VA patients were more likely [than patients in a national sample] to receive recommended care,” and had “received consistently better care across the board, including screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow up.” Finally–perhaps more telling and certainly most important–veterans themselves rate their overall satisfaction with VA health care at high levels: In a recent survey, 81 percent of VHA hospital patients expressed satisfaction with the care they received. The VHA’s broad success is due to a variety of factors, including top chronic-disease-management programs, state-of-the-art electronic recordkeeping, and a savvy emphasis on long-term preventative care–many of the same initiatives contained in the administration’s public-option plan, as it turns out. Of course, no system is perfect, and the VA’s is not without problems, particularly structural inefficiencies. These include redundant disability evaluations with the Department of Defense (or DoD, which is a separate entity from the VA, and responsible for the well-documented 2007 failings at Walter Reed Army Medical Center), inadequate information sharing with DoD, and outdated disability-evaluation criteria. Yet one can attribute the majority of these problems to supply being overtaken by demand. According to the VA, the number of patients it treated increased from 4.2 million in 2001 to nearly 5.5 million in 2008. This growth spurt, due to an increase in veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan as well as aging Vietnam veterans, has overwhelmed the system. Meanwhile the VA’s annual budget has not kept pace, rising only nominally from $67 billion in 2003 (adjusted for inflation) to $82 billion in 2007–an average of $3 billion per year. The result has been poor patient case management and a backlog of claims. The VA, however, has recognized its ills and has begun taking steps to remedy them, including prioritizing unresolved claims and soliciting recommendations for improvement from VA staff. Given proper resources and leadership, a public option–if that is indeed what President Obama calls for tonight–modeled and sold on the strengths of the VA system, could serve as a viable framework for quality, affordable, and yes, tenable, government-run national health care.

Lawrence J. Korb, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, served as Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Reagan administration. Sean E. Duggan is a research associate at the Center. The two are co-authors of the forthcoming book, Serving America’s Veterans.

FARIDABAD – Several people were feared trapped when a three-storey building housing a shopping centre collapsed Wednesday in this Haryana city adjoining the national capital, police said.

Police officials said that at least two people were taken out of the debris with serious injuries shortly after the building called City Centre came crashing down with a deafening roar.

The incident took place in the New Industrial Township (NIT) Phase I. The accident happened all of a sudden, stunned witnesses told the police.

A police officer told IANS: “We can’t say how many people have died because the building has fallen in the front. We are trying to find how many people are trapped.”

Another officer added: Some construction work was going on in the building. Heavy generator sets were installed on top of the building when it came crashing down.
